A man has been charged after allegedly leading police on a pursuit through Lake Macquarie overnight.

Police were patrolling Blacksmiths around 10pm on Wednesday, 19 March, when they spotted a vehicle stopped in a turning lane. Suspecting it had broken down, officers approached to offer assistance. However, as they neared the car, the driver allegedly sped away.

A pursuit was initiated as the vehicle continued through Swansea before coming to a stop on Wood Street, where the driver fled on foot. Officers gave chase and arrested the 30-year-old man following a brief struggle.

He was taken to Belmont Police Station and charged with several offences, including:

  • Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously
  • Driving unlicensed for the vehicle class
  • Using an unregistered Class A motor vehicle on the road
  • Hindering or resisting a police officer in the execution of duty

The man was refused bail and is scheduled to appear before Belmont Local Court today, Thursday, 20 March.
