Man Arrested After Pursuit on the M1

newy.com.au – A 33-year-old man is set to face court today after an alleged police pursuit that spanned from Ourimbah to Beresfield in the early hours of this morning.

At around 3:30am on Tuesday, 18 March 2025, authorities received reports of a Mitsubishi Lancer being driven dangerously along the M1 near Ourimbah. Responding officers located the vehicle parked near the Wyong Road Interchange.

As police approached and activated their warning lights, the driver allegedly sped off, prompting a pursuit. Officers deployed tyre spikes further along the motorway, successfully bringing the vehicle to a stop at Beresfield. The driver then allegedly fled on foot but was quickly apprehended after a short chase.

The man was taken to Maitland Police Station, where he was charged with multiple offences, including police pursuit – not stopping and driving recklessly, as well as failing to stop at a red arrow. In addition, he was charged with breaching an apprehended violence order (AVO) in relation to a separate matter.

He was refused bail and is scheduled to appear before Maitland Local Court today.

A witness who had just finished a night shift in Sydney described the unusual pursuit on Reddit, saying, “We got up to 80km/h once and the rest of the way was 20-60km/h with about 11 cop cars. The chased vehicle had 4 blown tyres and they sat behind it all the way until he lost a wheel at Tarro Bridge.” The witness, who lives in North Lambton, said they took a detour home through Minmi, adding, “What a bloody night. Should have been in bed an hour ago :((.”
