newy.com.au – A 21-year-old man has been charged after a police pursuit through Newcastle suburbs in the early hours of Friday, 14 March 2025, led to the discovery of an alleged unauthorised firearm in his possession.

The incident began around 12.50am when officers from Newcastle City Police District spotted a moped carrying a pillion passenger travelling dangerously along Brunker Road, Adamstown. When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the rider failed to comply, triggering a pursuit.

The chase moved through the suburbs of Adamstown, Hamilton South, and Merewether before coming to an end on Henry Street, Merewether, where the vehicle stopped, and both riders fled on foot. Officers quickly apprehended the alleged rider following a short foot pursuit, while the passenger managed to escape and remains at large.

Upon searching the 21-year-old, police allegedly discovered an unauthorised firearm. He was taken into custody and transported to Newcastle Police Station, where he was charged with multiple offences, including unlawful entry, possession of an unauthorised firearm, failing to stop during a police pursuit, and possessing suspected stolen goods. Additionally, he was charged with offences related to vehicle licensing.

The accused was refused bail and is set to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Friday, 14 March 2025. Investigations are ongoing as police continue efforts to locate the second individual involved.
