Hundreds of skilled jobs in the Hunter are secured for the next decade following a $569 million federal government contract supporting the Royal Australian Air Force’s E-7A Wedgetail surveillance aircraft.
The Albanese Government announced the substantial investment today, highlighting its commitment to both national defence capabilities and the economic stability of the region.
The funding guarantees employment for about 170 workers directly in the Hunter region, in addition to around 360 existing Defence and industry personnel at RAAF Base Williamtown.
Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles highlighted the significance of the investment, stating: “The Albanese Government continues to invest in the capabilities needed for our Defence Force; this is in stark contrast to the Coalition and their decade of neglect.”
He described the Wedgetail aircraft as “one of the most advanced in-air battle management capabilities in the world.”
Paterson MP, Meryl Swanson, echoed the Deputy Prime Minister’s statements, noting the broad economic benefits for the region.
“This funding supports a critical capability that keeps Australians safe but also ensures financial security for hundreds of families across the Hunter region,” she said.
The E-7A Wedgetail, operated by the RAAF, provides vital airborne command and situational awareness, forming a key component of Australia’s integrated air and missile defence system. The aircraft’s ongoing maintenance and support will primarily be delivered through Hunter-based workers and local businesses, bolstering the region’s already robust defence industry.
According to Paterson MP Meryl Swanson, the investment brings welcome stability for the local economy, noting: “This contract is great news for small and medium-sized businesses, ensuring certainty and continued opportunities in the Hunter region.”
This latest investment will support around 530 jobs in total within the Hunter area.
