newy.com.au – Motorists travelling through Hexham should prepare for changed traffic conditions on Maitland Road as work continues on the Hexham Straight Widening project. The adjustments are aimed at minimising disruptions while ensuring progress on the vital infrastructure upgrade.

To reduce the impact on daily commuters, the works will take place overnight from 7pm to 5am. Key changes include:

  • Contraflow traffic arrangements will be in place for both directions on Maitland Road, from Sparke Street to north of Shamrock Street, on Sunday, 9 March, and Monday, 10 March. Additionally, a temporary blackout of traffic lights at the Maitland Road and Shamrock Street intersection will occur on Monday, 10 March.

  • Lane closures and a temporary speed reduction to 40km/h will apply to the outbound lanes of Maitland Road from the Newcastle Inner City Bypass to north of Old Maitland Road, Sandgate, from Sunday, 9 March, to Thursday, 13 March. Another blackout of traffic lights will take place at the Maitland Road and Old Maitland Road intersection on Sunday, 9 March.

  • Temporary restriction of the left turn lane into Old Maitland Road from Sunday, 9 March, to Thursday, 13 March. Northbound vehicles from Newcastle will need to use a U-turn facility 200 metres north of Old Maitland Road to access it from the southbound direction.

A temporary speed limit of 60km/h will remain in place throughout the work zone during daytime operations, with a further reduction to 40km/h overnight.

Oversize and overmass (OSOM) operators should note that the project operates on UHF channel 45, and vehicles requiring a permit must strictly adhere to their approved routes.

Work hours will be:

  • Major works: 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday
  • Out-of-hours works: 7pm to 7am, Sunday to Thursday, and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays

Motorists are urged to follow traffic control instructions, allow extra travel time of up to 15 minutes, and consider alternative routes where possible.

Transport for NSW appreciates drivers’ patience during these essential upgrades. For real-time updates, visit Live Traffic NSW or download the Live Traffic NSW app.
