newy.com.au – The Liberal Party has pledged a $240,000 investment to upgrade Somerset Drive Park No. 1, should they win the upcoming election. The commitment, announced by Liberal candidate for Paterson, Laurence Antcliff, includes installing new fencing and a scoreboard to enhance the popular sporting facility.
Antcliff emphasised that the upgrade is in response to community concerns, stating that Paterson residents deserve modern and well-maintained sports facilities—something he claims Labor has failed to deliver.
“This six-figure investment, which only a Liberal Government can deliver, will protect the fields from intruders and ensure the longevity of this vital community space,” Antcliff said.
The park has previously been a target for vandalism, including damage from motorcycles. In his campaign, Antcliff has made securing the facility a priority, even launching a petition to rally support from local residents.
“I’m thrilled that, through strong campaigning, we have secured this investment for the Thornton Beresfield Bears’ home ground,” he added. “If elected as the Federal Member for Paterson, I will remain committed to listening to the community and taking action.”
Shadow Minister for Sport, Senator Anne Ruston, also backed the pledge, highlighting the importance of investing in grassroots sports infrastructure to encourage greater community participation in physical activity.
“By supporting key local sporting facilities like this one in Paterson, we can make it easier and more enjoyable for people to get active,” Ruston said. “We know that a healthy and active lifestyle brings significant physical and mental health benefits and strengthens the community as a whole.”
