newy.com.au – A young motorcyclist has lost his licence after being caught travelling at 178km/h on the Hunter Expressway, more than double his legal speed limit.
On 27 February 2025, at approximately 5:15pm, officers from Newcastle Highway Patrol were conducting speed enforcement operations at Buchanan when they detected a 19-year-old rider speeding eastbound on a Honda CBR650R. The rider, who held a P1 provisional licence, is legally restricted to a maximum speed of 90km/h, meaning he was exceeding his limit by 88km/h.
After being stopped by police, it was also found that the motorcyclist did not have a P-plate displayed on the rear of his bike, a requirement for all P1 riders in NSW. As a result, he was issued Traffic Infringement Notices for exceeding the speed limit by over 45km/h and failing to comply with P1 licence conditions.
In addition to the fines, the young rider’s NSW licence was immediately suspended for six months. Authorities continue to urge all road users to obey speed limits and adhere to their licence conditions to ensure safety on the roads.
This incident follows a similar case in July 2024, where a 17-year-old P-plater was caught driving at 170km/h, nearly 80km/h over the speed limit, and subsequently lost his licence for six months. Authorities continue to urge all road users to obey speed limits and adhere to their licence conditions to ensure safety on the roads.
