Off-Duty Police Officer Assaulted in Newcastle, Man Charged

newy.com.au – A man has been charged after allegedly attacking an off-duty police officer at a Newcastle hotel in the early hours of Saturday, 1 March 2025.

Emergency services were called to a venue on Steel Street, Newcastle West, around 1.30am following reports of an assault. Officers from Newcastle City Police District were told that an off-duty officer had attempted to break up an argument when he was allegedly doused with liquid before being punched in the face, knocking him unconscious.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the officer for serious facial injuries before transporting him to hospital for further care.

A police investigation was launched, leading to the arrest of a 31-year-old man at a residence on Wharf Road, Newcastle, around 3am the same morning. The man was taken to Newcastle Police Station, where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was initially refused bail and appeared before Parramatta Local Court later that day. He was subsequently granted conditional bail and is due to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Monday, 3 March 2025.
