newy.com.au – A critical incident investigation has been launched after a man suffered a medical episode while in custody at Newcastle Police Station, leaving him in a critical condition.

The 48-year-old man, who was in the custody of Corrective Services NSW, reportedly collapsed around 12:30 am on Thursday, 27 February 2025. Police officers at the station, along with NSW Ambulance paramedics, provided immediate assistance.

Despite their efforts, the man’s condition deteriorated, and he was rushed to John Hunter Hospital, where he remains in a critical state.

Authorities have confirmed that the Brisbane Water Police District will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The inquiry will also be subject to an independent review to ensure transparency.
