newy.com.au – World champion cliff-diver Rhiannon Iffland, dedicated Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie volunteer Lee Baines, and acclaimed mural artist Goya Torres are among more than 60 finalists vying for honours in the 2025 Lake Mac Awards.
Recognised as the highest civic accolade in the region, the awards celebrate outstanding contributions to the community, spanning sports, arts, environmental initiatives, and volunteer work.
With 13 categories in total, the prestigious title of Lake Mac Ambassador remains the most coveted award. Last year’s recipient, former RAAF ‘Top Gun’ pilot and local entrepreneur Matt Hall, will pass the honour to one of six finalists. This year’s nominees include Dr Alyce Barnes, a pioneering researcher in women’s physical activity; Aaron Carter, a leader in community-focused education; Bradley Dunn, CEO of Australia’s largest suicide prevention network; Rhiannon Iffland, an eight-time world cliff-diving champion and mentor; Ann-Maria Martin, a dedicated advocate for survivors of domestic violence; and Anna Noon, a passionate campaigner for social and environmental change.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz praised the calibre of nominees, highlighting the breadth of talent and dedication within the community.
“It is inspiring to learn more about the incredible achievements and efforts of people in Lake Macquarie across our 13 award categories,” he said. “The individuals, groups, and events on this list have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of others, often behind the scenes and without recognition.”
Notably, the categories for Lake Mac Community Group of the Year and Lake Mac Volunteer of the Year each attracted seven finalists, showcasing the significant contributions made by community-driven initiatives.
“This year’s awards not only honour those making a difference but also provide role models for others to admire and aspire to,” Mayor Shultz added.
Winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Friday, 28 March 2025, an event proudly sponsored by Allambi Care and Avondale University.
