newy.com.au – A man has been charged with attempted murder following a violent confrontation with police in Mayfield earlier this month.

The incident occurred around 4:10pm on Saturday, 15 February 2025, when officers responded to reports of a welfare concern at a unit block on Hanbury Street. Upon arrival, a 46-year-old man allegedly ran at police, assaulting an officer with a bladed tactical shovel.

Attempts to subdue the man with a taser were unsuccessful, leading police to fire shots. Officers immediately provided first aid before NSW Ambulance paramedics transported him to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.

Following investigations, the man was taken into custody at the hospital on Sunday, 23 February 2025. He now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, assaulting a police officer, affray, and use of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.

He was refused bail and faced Newcastle Local Court via a bedside hearing today, Monday, 24 February 2025. The court again denied him bail, and he is set to reappear on Tuesday, 25 February 2025.

A critical incident investigation, led by Strike Force Arbor under the Hunter Valley Police District, is underway to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The investigation is also subject to an independent review.
