Federal member for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon testing out the new lockers
newy.com.au – To ease the pressue on the Wallsend Post Office, new parcel lockers have been installed with increased staffing, addressing longstanding community concerns over service delays and accessibility.
Residents had previously reported extended wait times and instances of being turned away due to capacity issues at the post office. In response, Federal Member for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon, took the matter to Parliament, highlighting the community’s frustrations and urging Australia Post to take immediate action.
In August 2024, following Ms Claydon’s advocacy, Australia Post committed to employing an additional staff member to alleviate the pressure on existing personnel. This move was welcomed by the community, as it aimed to reduce wait times and improve overall service quality.
Building on this progress, Australia Post has now installed a bank of parcel lockers at Wallsend Village Shopping Centre. These lockers offer residents a secure and convenient method to collect or send parcels at any time, effectively bypassing the need to queue during business hours.
Ms Claydon expressed her satisfaction with the developments, stating, “This is a significant win for the Wallsend community. The addition of both staff and parcel lockers directly addresses the issues residents have been facing. I will continue to monitor the situation to ensure these measures lead to sustained improvements in service delivery.”
The combined efforts of increased staffing and the introduction of parcel lockers are expected to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of postal services in Wallsend, benefiting the rapidly growing suburbs of Maryland, Fletcher, Minmi, and the broader community.
