newy.com.au – Two teenagers have been charged following an alleged armed robbery near the Newcastle Light Rail Interchange on Saturday evening, 9 February 2025.
Police were called to the area near Station Street, Wickham, just after 6:30 pm following reports that a 17-year-old boy had been threatened with a knife and robbed by a group of teenagers. The offenders allegedly stole the victim’s phone and shoes before fleeing the scene.
A Newy 87.8 team member witnessed a Police vehicle with lights and sirens heading down Honeysuckle Drive, on arrival our team member witnessed six Police officers officers interviewing the victim, a young man at the ticket gates. Following this Police were seen circling the streets of Wickham.
Officers from Newcastle City Police District, with support from Police Transport Command, quickly launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of two boys aged 17 and 15 nearby. Upon searching the older suspect, police reportedly found the stolen items in his possession.
Both teenagers were taken to Newcastle Police Station, where the 17-year-old was charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon. He was refused bail and is set to appear in Children’s Court today, Sunday 9 February 2025. The 15-year-old was charged with robbery in company and was granted conditional bail to appear before the same court on Monday 3 March 2025.
Police have confirmed that investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
