newy.com.au – A fire erupted in the early hours of this morning at the Benchmark Hotel on Booner Street, Hawks Nest, situated just North of Nelson Bay.The fire prompted a significant emergency response. Superintendent Jim O’Farrell of Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed that eight fire trucks arrived at the scene just after 1 am to battle the blaze in the three-level mixed-occupancy building.

The ground floor of the hotel houses a bar and restaurant, while motel units occupy the upper two levels. Upon arrival, fire crews were met with thick smoke and flames emanating from the restaurant kitchen. Equipped with breathing apparatus and hose lines, firefighters managed to enter the building, bringing the fire under control and preventing further spread. However, the fire did impact the motel units on the second floor.

A total of 20 occupants were safely evacuated, with two receiving treatment from NSW Ambulance for smoke inhalation. One person was transported to hospital as a precaution.

Fire and Rescue NSW, alongside NSW Police, will conduct investigations into the cause and origin of the fire. Authorities have confirmed that all three levels have been thoroughly checked, and the building has now been declared safe.

Benchmark Hotel is a popular local dog friendly destination for locals and visitors.
