Fire & Rescue NSW were first alerted by the building’s automatic fire alarm system, followed by 24 Triple Zero calls reporting the blaze. Upon arrival, firefighters found a unit on level 8 engulfed in flames. The intensity of the fire necessitated the evacuation of the entire building complex.
Residents and witnesses described the scene as alarming. One individual reported, “Smoke looks like it’s coming from Watt St from my balcony. See sirens coming all the way from Stockton Bridge.” Another added, “Can smell the smoke from my balcony! I live in The Hill.”
A newy.com.au listener shared their personal experience, saying, “I was afraid my daughter is alone just had major surgery on her leg and cannot walk she has a unit in the building but is ok, I was scared as her phone wasn’t responding and I am at Mallabula an hour away.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet provided details on potential origins or contributing factors. No injuries have been reported at this time.
The City Extra building, a prominent structure in Newcastle’s CBD, incorporates part of the former Newcastle Herald building and printing press. The extent of the damage is still being assessed, but the swift action of emergency services prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent units and buildings.
As investigations continue, residents are reminded to ensure their smoke alarms are functioning and to remain vigilant for fire safety in their homes and workplaces.
