Newcastle Airport: Executive GM Planning & Infrastructure Ben Kochanski, Contracts Manager Catherine Gumley, Interim CEO Andrew Warrender, Senior Program Manager Raquel James Wright, Project Manager Alistair Grahamnewy.com.au – Newcastle Airport has embarked on a significant airfield reconfiguration project, marking a pivotal step towards its evolution into a premier international gateway. This development comes as the airport prepares for the inauguration of its new international terminal on 1 August 2025.

Interim CEO Andrew Warrender highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating that the reconfiguration will accommodate Code E wide-body aircraft and enhance ground handling capabilities. The initial phase involves establishing a centralised storage area for ground support equipment, facilitating the expansion of the international baggage handling system. Subsequent plans include upgrades to taxiway infrastructure and apron areas to meet anticipated growth.

The international terminal is the centrepiece of Newcastle Airport’s ambitious $250 million expansion project, designed to meet the increasing demand for convenient travel between Newcastle, the Greater Hunter, and international destinations. The terminal’s design, crafted by Cox Architecture, reflects the natural beauty of the Hunter region, aiming to provide a world-class passenger experience.

The Hunter Region, recognised as Australia’s sixth-largest regional economy, stands to benefit significantly from this expansion. The project is expected to create over 4,400 jobs and stimulate substantial economic activity in the coming years. The phased approach to airfield upgrades ensures that infrastructure development aligns with the evolving needs of both domestic and international carriers, while minimising disruptions to current operations.

As the airport works closely with airlines to introduce new short and long-haul flights, the community can anticipate exciting announcements in the near future, further enhancing the region’s connectivity to the world.

With the international terminal opening right around the corner, the staged works will create space for Code E widebody aircraft and expand Newcastle Airport’s ground handler storage capabilities.

Newcastle Airport Interim CEO Andrew Warrender is all smiles at the start of the airfield reconfiguration work. The first phase of the airfield program of works will see the installation of a new storage area for aircraft servicing equipment.
