Man Charged After Newcastle Shooting

Police have charged a 21-year-old man following a shooting in Newcastle early yesterday morning.

Around 5am on Friday, 24 January, a 36-year-old man arrived at a hospital in Waratah with a gunshot wound to the neck. He was later transferred to another facility, where he remains in a stable condition.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District were alerted and launched an investigation under Strike Force Fontanta. A crime scene was subsequently established at a home in Waratah West on Friday.

Following further inquiries, police stopped a vehicle on Minmi Road in Maryland at about 10.30am today (Saturday, 25 January). Upon searching the car, officers allegedly discovered a loaded firearm, ammunition and other weapons. All items were seized for forensic examination.

The 21-year-old was arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station, where he was charged with multiple offences including shooting with intent to murder, possessing a shortened firearm without authority, possessing a prohibited weapon without a permit, possessing ammunition without a licence, and possession of a stolen firearm.

Bail was refused, and the man is scheduled to appear before Parramatta Local Court tomorrow (Sunday, 26 January 2025).
