Motorcyclist Injured, Man Charged After Alleged Stolen SUV Crashes in Newcastle
A 26-year-old man is facing multiple charges related to firearms, drugs, and traffic offences following a dramatic police pursuit through Newcastle on Tuesday evening (14 January 2025). The chase culminated in a crash that injured a motorcyclist and overturned a police vehicle.
According to authorities, officers first attempted to stop a Ford Everest on Acacia Avenue, Waratah, shortly after 6pm. The vehicle had reportedly been stolen from a Cooks Hill address earlier in the day. When the driver allegedly ignored police instructions to pull over, a pursuit began.
The chase covered multiple suburbs of Newcastle before the SUV reportedly ran a red light at the intersection of Fern Street and Maitland Road, Wickham, and collided with a motorcycle. The 27-year-old rider sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics.
The Ford Everest allegedly continued to Albert Street, where it collided with a police vehicle, causing the patrol car to roll onto its side. None of the officers involved were hurt. The crash rendered the SUV inoperable, and the driver and a passenger fled on foot.
Following a foot pursuit, police arrested the 26-year-old passenger on Albert Street. Investigators say that prior to his arrest, he discarded a backpack containing a shortened firearm, methamphetamine, cannabis, and $2175 in cash.
He was taken to Newcastle Police Station and later charged with 11 offences:
