A 44-year-old man has been charged with high-range drink driving after a series of crashes in the car park of Junction Fair Shopping Centre in Newcastle on Sunday, 12 January 2025.

The incident occurred around 4:15 pm when the driver of a red Mazda 3 struggled to navigate the car park on Kenrick Street. He reportedly reversed his vehicle to reattempt entry, eventually crashing into three bollards. While attempting to park, he collided with a silver Mercedes sedan, reversed, and struck the same car a second time.

Members of the public intervened, and security attended the scene. After providing his details, the driver left the premises. Newcastle City Highway Patrol officers later intercepted the vehicle on Farquhar Street, where the driver returned a positive roadside breath test.

The man was arrested and transported to Newcastle Police Station. During questioning, he admitted to consuming “more than 10” cans of XXXX beer between 10:30 am and 3 pm. A subsequent breath analysis returned a reading of 0.246, well into the high-range category.

The man’s licence has been suspended, and he is scheduled to appear before Newcastle Local Court on 27 February 2025.
