A 42-year-old man is set to appear before Newcastle Local Court today after he was charged with a string of traffic, drug, and weapons offences.
Police from Newcastle City Police District first encountered the allegedly stolen vehicle about 2pm yesterday (Tuesday 7 January 2025) on Union Street, The Junction. When the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, officers initiated a pursuit.
The vehicle eventually came to a halt on Henry Street, Merewether, where the driver allegedly fled on foot. Following a short chase, the man was arrested a short time later. During a search of the suspect, police allegedly found and seized an amount of methamphetamine.
He was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with taking and driving a conveyance without the owner’s consent, police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly, and driving a motor vehicle during a disqualification period.
Further charges were laid in relation to previous alleged offences, including two counts of possessing a prohibited drug, supplying a prohibited drug (greater than indictable but less than commercial), possessing or using a prohibited weapon without a permit, and using a prohibited weapon contrary to a prohibition order.
The man was refused bail and is due to face Newcastle Local Court today (Wednesday 8 January 2025).
