Background

Renowned Hunter Valley winery, Tyrrell’s, has been named the top producer in the Halliday Wine Companion’s Top 100 Wineries for 2024, a prestigious title that recognises excellence and dedication to quality in Australian wine. Tyrrell’s winemaker Chris Tyrrell, a fifth-generation member of the family-run estate, expressed his gratitude, reflecting on the dedication of the vineyard and winery teams who have preserved Tyrrell’s legacy over generations.

Founded in 1858, Tyrrell’s has continued to evolve, with Chris Tyrrell assuming operational leadership a decade ago in 2014. The Halliday team, who lauded Tyrrell’s blend of tradition and innovation, stated: “History is the deep heartbeat, but constant refinement is the modus operandi.” The review praised the winery’s expert handling of single-site expressions and its restrained approach, resulting in wines that showcase the essence of Tyrrell’s vineyards. Of the wines submitted for review, over half earned gold medals, and 11 scored 96 points or higher.

Chris Tyrrell credited the accolade to the winery’s teams, emphasising the impact of their expertise on transforming the estate’s storied vineyards into wines celebrated worldwide. “Being named Australia’s top winery reflects the commitment of all who have worked at Tyrrell’s, from past generations to today. This honour recognises the quality and effort invested in every bottle.”

The announcement has been met with congratulations from wine enthusiasts and patrons, affirming Tyrrell’s position as a cherished name in Australian wine. Visitors are invited to experience Tyrrell’s offerings firsthand at their estate in Pokolbin, NSW, and explore their collection of award-winning wines through the winery’s website.
