Kotara Man Arrested After Child Abuse Material Investigation

Background

A 23-year-old man from Kotara has been charged with multiple alleged offences following an investigation by Newcastle City detectives. The investigation, which began in January 2022, was launched after a referral from the Australian Federal Police regarding the alleged uploading of child abuse material on a social media platform.

Yesterday morning, around 8:10am, police executed a search warrant at a residence in Kotara. During the search, officers uncovered and seized a number of items related to the investigation, including five gel blaster firearms, various prohibited weapons such as throwing knives, throwing stars, and a trench knife.

The man was subsequently arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station. He has been charged with a total of ten offences, including five counts of possessing unauthorised prohibited firearms, two counts of possessing or using prohibited weapons without a permit, two counts of possessing child abuse material, and one count of possessing bestiality material.

The accused was refused bail and is set to appear in Newcastle Local Court today, 25 October 2024.
