The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for potential severe thunderstorms across eastern New South Wales and south-eastern Queensland on Thursday. These storms are being driven by an upper trough combining with warm, humid air, creating conditions for heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and large hail.
The upper trough, a region of low atmospheric pressure, is interacting with the moisture-laden air from the tropics, leading to unstable conditions. This instability increases the likelihood of thunderstorms, particularly during the afternoon and evening.
For Newcastle, the forecast includes a 95% chance of rain, with expected rainfall between 6 to 35 mm. Thunderstorms are most likely to occur in the late afternoon and evening. Winds will shift throughout the day, starting southwesterly before turning south to southeasterly, with speeds of 15 to 25 km/h.
Residents are advised to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions as conditions may lead to localised flooding in some areas. For real-time information and further details, visit the Bureau of Meteorology website
