A 40-year-old man has been arrested and charged following a police operation in Merewether, early on Sunday morning. The arrest occurred after officers found the man slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle on Ocean Street at around 9:30am on 20 October 2024.
Newcastle City Police District officers conducted a search of the vehicle, which led to the discovery of illicit substances. Police found 21 grams of cocaine, 28 grams of methylamphetamine, a knife, and a stolen number plate.
The man was immediately taken into custody and transported to Newcastle Police Station, where he was charged with multiple offences, including drug possession, possession of a prohibited weapon, and handling stolen goods.
The man’s bail application was refused, and he is due to remain in custody until his court appearance on 24 October 2024.
NSW Police encourages residents to report any suspicious behaviour to the police. This arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crime in the Newcastle region.
