The Hunter Valley is set to play a significant role in Australia’s nuclear energy discussions, as the Federal Government’s House Select Committee on Nuclear Energy has launched an inquiry into the feasibility of nuclear power. The committee is seeking public submissions, with potential nuclear sites, including in the Hunter region, under consideration as part of the national energy mix.
Dan Repacholi, the Federal Member for Hunter and chair of the committee, highlighted the importance of this inquiry, noting that it comes at a pivotal moment for the nation. “With the ongoing debate over whether nuclear energy has a role in Australia’s future energy mix, as well as the mounting cost of living pressures being felt by Australians, this inquiry comes at a critical time,” Repacholi said.
He added that Australians are eager for answers regarding the Opposition’s nuclear energy proposal, which includes transitioning areas like the Hunter Valley from coal-fired power stations to nuclear energy. “Australians have a multitude of questions concerning the Opposition’s proposed nuclear energy idea. This Committee will be looking to answer some of these questions as it gives proper consideration to Australia’s future energy needs,” Repacholi said.
The inquiry will gather input from communities across the country that could be impacted by the plan, as well as from a broad range of experts. The committee will explore the financial, environmental, technical, and legal aspects of nuclear energy, considering its implications for the future of Australia’s energy policy.
Submissions are open until 15 November 2024, and the final report is expected by 30 April 2025. Residents of the Hunter Valley and other affected regions are encouraged to share their perspectives.
