Hunter beaches are set to come alive this weekend as the Nippers season kicks off, welcoming thousands of young participants back to the sand and surf.

On Sunday, children aged five to 14 from across the region will don their distinctive pink rash vests and dive into a new season of surf education and fun. The program focuses on teaching essential skills like CPR, rescue techniques, and ocean awareness, all within a safe and engaging environment. Proudly supported by Newcastle Permanent for over 40 years, the Nippers program continues to be a staple of the Hunter community.

Paul Juergens, Chief Distribution Officer at Newcastle Permanent, expressed excitement for the season ahead.

“Nippers provides an incredible opportunity for kids to develop crucial water safety skills while building confidence and enjoying our beautiful beaches,” Mr Juergens said. “It’s wonderful to see the community come together each year, and we’re proud to support a program that offers so much value to local families.”

Henry Scruton ESM, President of Hunter Surf Life Saving, highlighted the program’s role in nurturing the next generation of surf lifesavers.

“For our youngest Nippers, it’s about gaining comfort in the sand and waves. As they grow, they start learning the vital skills needed to become surf lifesavers,” Mr Scruton said. “The enduring support from Newcastle Permanent allows us to expand the program each year, reaching more families across the region.”

The Nippers program is offered at 13 clubs throughout the Hunter, from Catherine Hill Bay to Tea Gardens Hawks Nest, with registrations still open. Families interested in joining can visit www.surflifesaving.com.au/nippers/ for more information.

Last year, Newcastle Permanent supported over 10,000 Nippers across Surf Life Saving Clubs from the Central Coast to Queensland, reaffirming its commitment to promoting surf safety and community well-being.
