A motorcyclist has been hospitalised following a collision with a white sedan on Sandgate Road in Shortland. The incident occurred at approximately 12:50pm on Monday, 7th October 2024, prompting a swift response from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 484 Wallsend and Newcastle City Police.

Emergency services arrived at the scene to find the rider of the black motorcycle suffering from lower leg injuries. NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the rider before transporting them to hospital for further care.

Newcastle City Police District conducted preliminary breath tests on both the motorcyclist and the driver of the white sedan. Following these tests, the sedan’s driver was placed under arrest and taken to Waratah Police Station for further breath analysis.

Fire and Rescue crews worked to clear the scene, and Sandgate Road was partially closed to facilitate the removal of the damaged motorcycle. Local authorities remind motorists to slow down to 40km/h when passing emergency vehicles with flashing lights in areas with a speed limit of 80km/h or less.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
