today8 October 2024

Background

Around 12:20am on Tuesday, 8 October 2024, officers from the Hunter Valley Police District attempted to intercept an allegedly stolen vehicle on Deakin Street, Kurri Kurri. Despite repeated police instructions, the vehicle did not stop prompting a pursuit.

The chase moved through several local areas before ending on Love Street, Cessnock, where the vehicle eventually came to a stop. The three occupants then fled on foot but were quickly tracked down and apprehended by officers, with support from the Police Dog Unit.

The driver, a 19-year-old male, was taken into custody along with his two passengers, both aged 16. He faces multiple charges, including dangerous driving during a police pursuit, unlicensed driving, possession of a prohibited substance, and unauthorised use of a motor vehicle. He has been refused bail and is expected to appear before Cessnock Local Court today.

One of the 16-year-olds has been charged with being carried in a vehicle without the owner’s consent and entering enclosed land without lawful excuse. He too has been refused bail and is scheduled to appear at a children’s court later today.

The second 16-year-old was processed under the Young Offenders Act and will not face court.
