Firefighters Battle Deliberately Lit Bushfire Near South Wallsend Reservoir

today8 October 2024

Background

Firefighters from several stations were called into action on Sunday evening, as a deliberately lit bushfire broke out in the vicinity of the South Wallsend Water Reservoirs. The blaze, which started around 5:30pm on 6 October, burned through approximately three hectares of bushland.

Crews from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 484 Wallsend were the first on the scene, responding to reports of multiple fires along Transfield Avenue, Wallsend. Given the difficult location of the fire, additional support was requested, with Fire and Rescue NSW Station 251 Cardiff and Fire and Rescue NSW Station 498 Holmesville joining the effort, bringing their four-wheel-drive tanker appliances to help tackle the blaze.

Firefighters worked efficiently to contain the spread, taking advantage of mild weather conditions that helped prevent the situation from escalating further. Despite their efforts, the fire’s deliberate nature became evident, marking the fifth suspicious blaze in less than a month in the area. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, as well as any signs of smoke.

“This was another dangerous and unnecessary incident,” a fire service spokesperson said. “We’re asking the community to be on high alert, especially as we head into summer when conditions will make bushfires even more hazardous.”

With the bushfire season approaching, authorities are emphasising the importance of early reporting. Residents are reminded to contact Triple Zero (000) immediately if they spot smoke or flames in bushland areas, to help prevent any further incidents from spiralling out of control.
