Background

A 21-year-old man is due to face court today (Monday, 7 October 2024) after being charged with multiple offences in connection to a series of alleged armed robberies and a home invasion across Newcastle over the weekend.

The first incident allegedly occurred around 8:40 am on Saturday, 5 October 2024, when a 30-year-old man was getting into his parked car on Wentworth Street in Wallsend. According to police, the victim was approached by a man allegedly wielding a small axe. The armed man demanded cash and forced the victim to drive around the block before fleeing on foot. The shaken victim later reported the event to Waratah Police Station.

The second alleged offence happened the following morning at approximately 6:00 am on Sunday, 6 October 2024, when police were called to a residence on Bull Street, Cooks Hill. Authorities were informed that an intruder had broken into the home, stealing several personal items. Fortunately, no one was harmed during the incident. Newcastle City Police District officers established a crime scene and launched an investigation into the break-in.

Later on the same day, a third incident unfolded at around 12:15 pm on Parry Street, Cooks Hill. A 66-year-old man was allegedly accosted in his parked car by a man armed with a sharp instrument. The suspect, along with two other men, assaulted the car owner as he attempted to fend off the attackers. Police were contacted, and another investigation was launched into the violent attack.

Newcastle City Police detectives pursued the matter, and by 8:30 pm on Sunday, 6 October 2024, they located a suspect walking along Darby Street, Cooks Hill. The man attempted to flee when approached by police. It is alleged that during the chase, he brandished a steel bar in an effort to avoid arrest, prompting officers to deploy OC spray to subdue him. The man was then taken into custody.

After being decontaminated, the 21-year-old was charged with nine serious offences, including two counts of armed robbery, aggravated break and enter, assault, and assaulting a police officer. He also faces charges of using an offensive weapon to resist lawful detention and hindering police.

The man has been refused bail and is scheduled to appear before Newcastle Local Court later today, Monday, 7 October 2024. Police continue to investigate the incidents.

Further updates will follow as the case develops.
