The iconic Victorian rotunda in King Edward Park has been restored following an act of vandalism that left the historic structure damaged earlier this week. Newcastle City Council announced the completion of repairs today.
Social media users were surprised and pleased by the speed of the restoration, noting that the rotunda looks as beautiful as ever.
“Excellent. Hope it’s now covered by CCTV,” commented Fiona McCarlie, reflecting a common sentiment about the need for increased security.
Roy Powell added, “Have you installed security cameras in the surrounding trees?”
Wendy Germon echoed these concerns: “Hope there are cameras now to catch them next time and send the bill.”
Others focused on praising the workers involved in the restoration. “Well done City of Newcastle staff. If only other councils worked as quickly as you have on this iconic structure,” wrote Julieanne Perry Bright.
“Wow, that was quick!!! Thank you, Newcastle City Council workers,” exclaimed Judy Greentree.
While the community celebrates the restoration, there is a growing call for improved security measures to protect the rotunda from future vandalism. The installation of CCTV cameras and increased nighttime patrols are among the suggestions.
Margaret Kendall expressed her hopes: “Looks beautiful again. Hope there are security cameras to catch any other vandals who may target it.”
“Wonderful to have this iconic rotunda back to its original glory. It’s to be hoped that some sort of security cameras are part of this repair, as the vandals have not been apprehended,” commented William Royan.
The council has reiterated its appeal for anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
