Comedy Takes Centre Stage for Mental Health in Lake Macquarie

Background

Laughter will take the spotlight in Lake Macquarie as the Comedy for a Cause Mental Health showcase hits Rathmines Theatre on 11 October 2024. With an impressive lineup of comedians, including Tommy Dean, Sean Woodland, Fiona Cox, Mat Wakefield, and local favourite Huw Rogers, the event is set to bring humour with a purpose, all while supporting a vital cause.

The evening aims to raise awareness for mental health and provide financial backing for the Lake Macquarie & Newcastle Suicide Prevention Network’s Community Kickstart Program, an initiative that has received recognition for its impactful work.

Newcastle’s own Huw Rogers, a fast-rising star known for his witty observations and charm, will share the stage with seasoned acts. Rogers, who frequently incorporates his experiences with vision impairment into his routines, brings a unique and refreshing perspective to comedy. His ability to transform daily struggles into comedic gold is a testament to his resilience and creativity.

“My goal is to make people feel more comfortable with life’s challenges by laughing at them,” Rogers explained. “When you can laugh at something difficult, it helps you take control of it in some way. Comedy isn’t just about telling jokes; it’s about exploring new perspectives and finding healing through humour.”

Stephen McAlister, Lake Macquarie City Council’s Coordinator of Social and Community Planning, highlighted the importance of using the arts to foster better mental health outcomes.

“Connecting with others and reducing the stigma around mental health is critical to maintaining wellbeing,” McAlister said. “Comedy is a fantastic way to bring people together, and when we do it in the name of mental health, it creates a powerful sense of unity.”

The show, open to attendees aged 15 and over, is free to attend, but those who wish to support the cause further can opt to donate when booking their tickets. Doors will open at 7:00 pm, with the comedy kicking off at 7:30 pm and wrapping up around 9:30 pm, including a short interval.
