Beaumont St Closed Earlier near Hamilton Train Station After 73yo Hit By Car

Beaumont Street in Hamilton was closed to traffic following a collision earlier today, just ahead of the afternoon peak. The closure caused significant disruptions in the area, especially near the busy Hamilton Train Station.

Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 11:35am on Thursday, 26 September 2024, after receiving reports of a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at the intersection of Beaumont and Hudson Streets.

Police were informed that a car, driven by a 66-year-old man, had allegedly struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a 73-year-old man, was treated on-site by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being transported to the John Hunter Hospital. The man sustained head injuries but is currently in a stable condition.

The driver was also taken to the John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing, which is standard procedure in incidents of this nature.

Police from the Newcastle City Police District have established a crime scene, and the Crash Investigation Unit is on-site to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision. During this investigation, Beaumont Street remains closed to traffic, and authorities are advising motorists to avoid the area.

UPDATE: A 66-year-old man has been charged and faces court Friday 27/9/2024.

Local traffic diversions were put in place, but delays worsened.

At 3pm Newcastle Police advised the road had re-opened.
