Two men are grateful to be alive after their small fishing boat sank on Lake Macquarie late last night.
The men, aged 41 and 32, were casting lines about 500 metres north of Marks Point Marina when their tinny suddenly became unstable and overturned around 11 pm on Sunday.
Neither was wearing a life jacket at the time, leaving them clinging to the upturned boat as it slowly sank beneath them. Stranded in the water, they managed to make a desperate call to Triple Zero, alerting emergency servicest.
Local police officers arrived at the scene and borrowed a jet ski and two life jackets from a nearby resident. They reached the men and provided the life jackets to help them stay afloat.
A neighbour then assisted by bringing out his own boat, allowing the officers to bring the fishermen safely back to shore.
Both men escaped without injuries but were reminded of the importance of wearing life jackets while on the water.
