Emergency services rushed to the scene of a truck rollover on the Newcastle Inner City Bypass near Bennetts Green this morning, leading to traffic disruptions for northbound motorists.
The incident occurred just after 8:30 am on Monday, 23 September, when a truck travelling northbound tipped over just past Lake Street. One of the two northbound lanes (lane one) has been closed as a result, with heavy traffic conditions expected to persist throughout the morning.
Transport for NSW, along with police, firefighters, and paramedics, are on site managing the situation. A heavy vehicle tow truck has been deployed to assist in removing the overturned truck from the roadway.
Motorists are advised to reduce their speed, prepare to merge, and expect delays in the area. The eastbound left-turn slip lane to the Pacific Highway is also closed; however, drivers can still make the left turn at the traffic lights.
Witnesses at the scene reported that no one appeared to be injured in the accident. Local resident Soraya Coughlan shared on Facebook, “Truck rollover at the beginning of the bypass Bennetts Green. Traffic delays, blocking one lane northbound. Police and fire brigade on scene, no one injured from what I saw.”
Comments on social media suggest that another vehicle might have been involved, though this has not been confirmed by authorities. “Not sure, I think there was another car involved,” Coughlan added in response to a query.
Transport for NSW reported the incident and is actively working to alleviate traffic congestion. The latest check at 9:53 am indicates that lane closures remain in place while the scene is being cleared.
Motorists are encouraged to seek alternative routes where possible and stay updated through local traffic reports.
