Firefighters faced a challenging operation last night as they battled a fierce blaze at an auto repair and restoration at Kalaroo Road Redhead, complicated by hazardous materials and unexpected explosions.
Upon arrival, crews found the moderate-sized industrial building fully engulfed in flames. Inspector Peter Nies of Fire and Rescue NSW reported that the presence of large quantities of paint thinners, several vehicles, and a forklift intensified the fire and led to initial explosions.
“The flammable substances inside made the situation quite volatile,” Inspector Nies said. “We had to establish a restricted access zone around the building to ensure everyone’s safety.”
With limited entry points, firefighters initially worked to douse the flames by directing water through openings they created in the structure. “We used whatever access we had,” Inspector Nies explained. “By making holes in the building, we could get water onto the fire.”
Progress was made when crews managed to open one of the roller doors. Although it collapsed, its removal provided significant access to tackle the blaze more effectively. Additional openings were cut into the B and C sides of the building, as well as the D end, allowing firefighters to attack the fire from multiple angles.
“Putting water in from each side helped us knock it down,” Inspector Nies noted. “Once we had it under control, we maintained a presence throughout the night to ensure it was fully extinguished.”
The operation involved eight fire trucks, a hazardous materials unit, and escalated to a third alarm due to the complexity and risks posed by the fire.
No injuries have been reported, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the blaze.
