City of Newcastle will roll out the red carpet for a much-anticipated royal visit next year, with global sensation SIX The Musical set for a three-week reign at the Civic Theatre.
Since its debut on the West End in 2019, audiences worldwide have been captivated by the fast-paced, award-winning production. The show tells the extraordinary stories of the six wives of King Henry VIII as they step out of his shadow and reclaim their own narratives.
Currently playing in Melbourne as part of a national tour, SIX will make its first Australian appearance outside a capital city with an extended run in Newcastle from 10 April 2025.
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes described SIX as a cultural milestone for the Civic Theatre, promising a significant boost to the city’s cultural, economic, and tourism sectors.
“Enjoyed by more than 3.5 million people globally, this spectacular production is a major coup for City of Newcastle,” Cr Nelmes said.
“The show is a cultural sensation, with over 32 million views on TikTok and a combined streaming figure of over one billion.
“Following the success of Come From Away and The Rocky Horror Show, which both set box office records at the Civic Theatre, there’s no doubt SIX will be the hottest ticket in town when it hits the stage next year.”
Cr Nelmes also noted that events like this are key economic drivers, drawing significant visitor numbers and delivering benefits to Newcastle’s economy.
Tickets for the three-week season will be available later this month, with fans encouraged to join the waitlist via civictheatrenewcastle.com.au for pre-sale access.
Written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, SIX reimagines the historical figures of Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anna of Cleves, Katherine Howard, and Catherine Parr as fierce pop stars, each telling their story through a modern pop-inspired soundtrack.
Louise Withers, producer of the Australian production, expressed excitement about bringing the hit musical to Newcastle.
“SIX is truly a global phenomenon and has received rapturous acclaim in Australia. We’re thrilled to bring this incredible show to Newcastle and look forward to breaking more records in 2025,” Ms Withers said.
Six has earned 35 major international awards, including two Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Costume Design, as well as a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theatre Album.
With productions in Australia, Canada, the US, Europe, and South Korea, the musical has achieved worldwide recognition. New productions are also set to debut in Singapore, the Philippines, and Japan.
SIX The Musical will be on stage at the Civic Theatre Newcastle from 10 April to 4 May 2025. For more information, visit civictheatrenewcastle.com.au.
