Human remains discovered at Stockton Beach last month have been identified as a 20-year-old man who was reported missing from the same location in November 2023.
At approximately 3pm on Monday, 26 August 2024, a man walking along the shoreline of Stockton Beach found a bone and reported it to Newcastle City Police. Following forensic analysis, the remains were confirmed to belong to a swimmer who disappeared on 26 November 2023 after becoming caught in a rip.
The missing man was part of a group of five friends who were swimming about 200 metres offshore when they encountered difficulties. While three of the swimmers were rescued and one made it back to shore, the 20-year-old was last seen submerged and could not be found despite a multi-agency air and water search that lasted several days.
Authorities have stated that the death is not considered suspicious, and a report is being prepared for the Coroner.
Further updates are expected once the Coroner’s report is complete.
