A driver on his green provisional licence was allegedly involved in a drink-driving incident early this morning, causing significant damage to two parked cars on Cleary Street before 4am.

The driver allegedly side-swiped a white Subaru Forester, severely damaging both driver-side doors and panelling. The vehicle then rear-ended a white ute parked in front, causing substantial damage to the rear of the ute.

A newy.com.au reporter was on the scene this morning and spoke to a relieved man, whose car was left unscathed, he was parked directly behind the damaged Subaru. “I heard a big bang at 4am this morning,” he said. Shortly after, a woman emerged from a few doors up to inspect the serious damage to her Subaru in the daylight. Despite the situation, she remained in surprisingly good spirits and told our reporter that a green P-plater crashed into the cars. She also told us that both the driver’s mother and the police arrived shortly after the accident, she said the Police found the driver had been drink driving and the offending car had to be towed away.

NSW Police released the following statement:

About 3.20am today (Sunday 8 September 2024), police were called to Cleary Street, Hamilton, following reports of a multi-vehicle crash.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District attended and were told a Ford vehicle collided with two parked cars.

The P-plate driver, a 20-year-old man, was breath tested at the scene, returning a positive result.

He was arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station for a breath analysis where he was issued an infringement notice for drive with low range PCA (1st offence) and served a licence suspension notice.
