University of Newcastle Submits Application for New City Campus Accommodation

today6 September 2024

Background

The University of Newcastle has officially lodged a State Significant Development Application (SSDA) for a modern student accommodation complex, which is set to transform the city’s educational landscape. The application, now with the Department of Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure (DPHI), marks a significant milestone for the university’s ambitious project.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky, AO, expressed enthusiasm about the progress made. “After months of meticulous planning and community consultation, we are excited to be moving closer to breaking ground on this much-needed student housing development,” he said.

The proposed City Campus accommodation will offer 445 beds, addressing the growing demand for student housing in Newcastle’s city centre. “Our students’ housing needs are a top priority, and this project will go a long way in alleviating accommodation pressures,” Professor Zelinsky added.

The university conducted several community drop-in sessions as part of its consultation process, gathering valuable feedback. “The input from local residents has been instrumental in shaping the final proposal. We believe this project will not only provide high-quality student accommodation but also enhance the vibrancy of the city,” said Zelinsky.

Pending approval, construction is slated to begin in 2025, with completion expected 18 months later. Early site preparation is scheduled for late 2024, which will include relocating approximately 45 parking spaces to prevent disruptions during the build.

The SSDA will soon be open for public exhibition, allowing interested parties to review the plans and submit their comments. For updates and more information, the University of Newcastle encourages the public to visit its website or contact the project team directly at citycampus@newcastle.edu.au.

This project is part of the University of Newcastle’s ongoing commitment to creating modern, sustainable living spaces for its students while fostering stronger ties with the Newcastle community.
