Background

Three teenagers have been charged following an alleged pursuit through Newcastle early this morning.

Around 1:45 am on Wednesday, 4 September 2024, police were called to a residence on McIsaac Street, Tighes Hill, in response to reports of a break-in. Upon arrival, Newcastle City Police District officers were informed that a Mazda 3 had been stolen from the property after a break and enter.

The 47-year-old homeowner reportedly attempted to intervene but was injured when the stolen vehicle allegedly reversed over his foot and collided with several parked cars.

Shortly after, police spotted the stolen vehicle on Maitland Road, Islington, and attempted to stop it. However, the driver allegedly failed to comply, leading to a brief pursuit before police lost sight of the car.

Following further investigations, the vehicle was located on Brunker Road, Broadmeadow. Another pursuit was initiated when the vehicle once again allegedly failed to stop.

The chase ended in Hexham, where police arrested three teenage boys, who were then taken to Newcastle Police Station.

A 15-year-old boy from the Hunter Valley has been charged with multiple offences, including two counts of police pursuit – not stop – driver at speed, aggravated break and enter, and take and drive conveyance without consent. He has been granted strict conditional bail and is scheduled to appear in a children’s court on Monday, 16 September 2024.

Meanwhile, a 14-year-old boy from the Mid North Coast and a 15-year-old from the Liverpool Plains have also been charged with aggravated break and enter and being carried in a stolen vehicle. Both have been refused bail and are set to appear in a children’s court later today.
