Teen Charged After Police Pursuit Ends in Multiple Collisions

Background

Newcastle City Police District officers initiated a pursuit of an allegedly stolen vehicle in Jesmond at approximately 3:20 pm on Thursday, 29 August 2024. The pursuit was brought to an abrupt end when the vehicle crashed into a police car, rendering the police vehicle immobile.

Despite this, the allegedly stolen car continued its journey before colliding with multiple vehicles on Edith Street, Waratah. Following a brief foot pursuit, police arrested three individuals.

NSW Ambulance paramedics were quickly on the scene, and the three individuals were transported to John Hunter Hospital. The passengers, aged 13 and 18, sustained minor injuries, while the 15-year-old driver suffered a head injury and is reported to be in stable condition. A 59-year-old female driver of another vehicle also sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Upon being discharged from the hospital, the 15-year-old boy and 18-year-old man were taken to Waratah Police Station. The 15-year-old has been charged with several serious offences, including police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, drive furiously in motor vehicle do/cause bodily harm, and use offensive weapon in company to prevent detention. He was refused bail and is scheduled to appear before a children’s court today, Friday, 30 August 2024.

The 18-year-old man has been charged with being carried in a conveyance taken without the consent of the owner. He was also refused bail and is set to appear before Newcastle Local Court today.

The 13-year-old boy remains in hospital and has been charged with being carried in a conveyance taken without the consent of the owner. He is awaiting a bedside hearing.
