Newcastle Liberal Candidates Pledge to Freeze Rates for Four-Year Council Term

today30 August 2024

Background

The Newcastle Liberal Council candidates have announced a commitment to freezing rates for the entire four-year term of Council, should they secure victory in the upcoming local government elections on 14th September.

Ward Four Councillor and Lord Mayoral Candidate Callum Pull highlighted the financial strain many Newcastle residents are currently facing due to the rising cost of living.

“We’re living in a cost-of-living crisis; residents are paying more for groceries and electricity,” Cr Pull stated. “Over the last decade, rates have risen by more than sixty per cent. These continuous increases contribute to inflation and add further pressure on households in Newcastle.”

Cr Pull also pointed out that rates have consistently been increased by the maximum allowable amount over recent years, exacerbating the financial burden on local families.

Ward Two Councillor Jenny Barrie reinforced the party’s commitment to sound financial management, aimed at alleviating the financial strain on residents and businesses alike.

“Our team is focused on easing the pressure on family budgets and reducing the cost of living,” Cr Barrie said. “By freezing rates, we aim to provide financial relief to Newcastle’s households.”

Rochelle Manning, the Ward One Candidate, echoed these concerns, noting that rising living costs are a major issue for many in the community.

“This is one of the top issues being raised with me by residents,” Ms Manning said. “Further rate hikes could push many families and businesses into serious financial hardship.”

The Newcastle Liberals are currently the only political group contesting the upcoming elections that have committed to freezing rates for the entire term of Council. Their pledge comes as part of a broader platform focused on responsible financial management and support for the local community during challenging economic times.
