Dog Baiting Incidents Reported Across Hunter Region

today27 August 2024

Background

Raymond Terrace, Cessnock, Maitland, Thornton, and Rutherford are on high alert as reports of dog baiting increase.

According to Hunter Training Centre, K9 Perception, Dogs across multiple areas in the Hunter Region have been targeted by a surge in dog baiting incidents. Reports have emerged from Raymond Terrace, Cessnock, and more recently, the Maitland area, with confirmed locations including Thornton, Maitland, and Rutherford.

According to concerned residents, the baiting is occurring both in public spaces and by throwing bait over fences into private yards. The bait used is believed to be highly toxic and can lead to severe symptoms or even death in dogs if not treated promptly.

A representative from K9 Perception, a local organisation focused on dog welfare, has confirmed that multiple dog owners have reached out since yesterday to report cases of their dogs being poisoned.

Symptoms to Watch For

Dog owners are advised to be vigilant and monitor their pets for signs of poisoning. Common symptoms include:

  1. Nausea, diarrhoea, respiratory issues, and pale mucous membranes in the throat area.
  2. Intense salivation, unsteady walking, staggering, and potential respiratory failure or cramps.
  3. Rapid heartbeat, possible cardiac arrest, and signs of paralysis.
  4. Vomiting, unconsciousness, and excessive panting.

If any of these symptoms are observed, immediate veterinary attention is essential.
