Second Shoe Theft Caught on Camera in Cessnock in a number of weeks

Cessnock residents are facing yet another instance of petty crime as a thief was caught on camera stealing shoes from a front veranda late last night. The incident occurred on 15 August 2024 at 11:18 pm and is the second shoe theft in the area within a week.

In this latest case, the suspect was captured on a Ring doorbell camera. The footage shows a young man, believed to be in his 20s, approaching a home on a quiet Cessnock street. The thief is seen wearing a grey hoodie pulled over the top of a black hat, along with black pants and white Nike shoes. He carried a grey shoulder bag with a black strap.

Despite a sensor light activating as he approached, the thief was undeterred. He tiptoed across the timber veranda towards a pair of white Adidas shoes, picking them up and calmly walking away. A dog can be heard barking in the background when the veranda made a squeaking noise, but the thief continued without hesitation.

This theft closely follows a similar incident reported on 8 August, where a woman riding a bike was seen stealing shoes from another property in Cessnock during the day. The repeated nature of these crimes has sparked concern among locals, with many voicing frustrations over the apparent increase in petty crime.

The video has been shared widely on social media, with the homeowner expressing anger over the theft. In her post, she condemned the thief, sarcastically referring to him as an “upstanding citizen” and warning that the footage has been handed over to the police.

Cessnock’s history of petty crime is well-known, with theft and trespassing remaining persistent issues. Police are investigating the incident and encourage anyone with information to come forward.
