Maitland, NSW — The NSW Government has revealed the initial designs for the new Maitland Mental Health Rehabilitation facility, which is set to be co-located on the Maitland Hospital campus in Metford. The new facility will take over some of the services currently operating out of Morisset Hospital, including rehabilitation and forensic mental health services.

The unveiling marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to enhance mental health services in the Hunter region. Greg Piper MP, a key advocate for mental health reforms in the region, shared the announcement on social media, encouraging the community to engage with the project by providing feedback on the concept designs.

The community is invited to learn more about the new facility and contribute their feedback at two drop-in sessions scheduled to be held at the Maitland Hospital’s main foyer on Thursday, 21 August 2024. These sessions will run from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and again from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. For those unable to attend in person, feedback can also be submitted through an online survey, available until Friday, 30 August 2024.

The concept designs for the facility, which were released in August 2024, reflect the government’s commitment to delivering modern and effective mental health care. The design process has now transitioned into the schematic and detailed design phases, with completion expected by late 2024.

The new facility aims to provide state-of-the-art rehabilitation and forensic mental health services, ensuring that patients receive care in a setting that promotes recovery and well-being. The co-location with Maitland Hospital is intended to facilitate better integration of services, making it easier for patients to access comprehensive care.

Morisset Hospital, which has a long history dating back to its establishment in 1909, has been a key provider of mental health services in the region. However, the new facility in Maitland is part of a broader strategy to modernise and decentralise mental health care across NSW, ensuring that services are more accessible to communities across the state.

Community feedback is seen as a critical component of the project’s success, and the NSW Government is encouraging all residents to take part in the consultation process. The views and concerns of the local community will be considered as the project moves forward.

The Maitland Mental Health Rehabilitation facility is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the growing demand for mental health services in the Hunter region, providing a vital resource for individuals and families affected by mental illness.

For more information on the project or to view the concept designs, community members can attend the information sessions at Maitland Hospital or visit the project’s online feedback portal.
