Group Assault in Merewether Leaves Four Hospitalised, 18YO CHARGED

18YO MAITLAND MAN CHARGED

Merewether, NSW — A man has been charged following a brutal assault on Hickson Street, Merewether, that left four young men hospitalised with serious injuries. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 11 August 2024, with emergency services responding to the scene at approximately 12:15 am.

Officers from the Newcastle City Police District were informed that a group of men, all aged 22, had been assaulted by several attackers who fled before police arrived. NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the victims at the scene for a range of facial injuries before they were transported to John Hunter Hospital.

Following an investigation, police arrested an 18-year-old man at a home in Maitland later on Sunday. He was taken to Maitland Police Station, where he was charged with two counts of recklessly causing grievous bodily harm in company, two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company, and affray. The man was granted strict conditional bail and is scheduled to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, 12 September 2024.

The incident has also sparked a public appeal for witnesses. An anonymous post in a local Facebook group has urged anyone who was in the vicinity of Hickson Street around the time of the assault to come forward. The poster, who highlighted the severity of the victims’ injuries, expressed the need for additional witnesses to assist the ongoing police investigation.

It is understood one of the victims suffered broken teeth and jaw.
