This transformer will be transported from the Port of Newcastle to Eraring tonight.

A large transformer will be transported tonight from the Port of Newcastle to the Eraring Power Station under OSOM (Over Size Over Mass) escort. The transformer is expected to pass through Toronto between 11 pm and 1 am, though the exact timing has not been confirmed.

This transport is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the region’s energy infrastructure. The Eraring Power Station, initially scheduled to close in 2025, has had its operational life extended to ensure energy stability in New South Wales.

In addition to the extension, two significant battery projects are underway at the Eraring site:

  1. Stage One Battery Project: Origin Energy has committed approximately $600 million to construct a 460 MW battery energy storage system with a two-hour dispatch duration. This stage has planning approval to expand up to 700 MW with a four-hour dispatch duration and is expected to be operational by the end of 2025.
  2. Stage Two Battery Project: Approved recently, this project involves a 240 MW battery with a four-hour duration, adding over 1 GWh to the site’s storage capacity. Construction is scheduled to begin early in 2025, with the project becoming operational in the first quarter of 2027. The combined storage capacity of both stages will exceed 2 GWh.

Motorists on the M1 should follow directions from pilot vehicles or Police, you will be given an opportunity to overtake the load.
