On Monday 29th July 2024, nurses and midwives from Lake Macquarie Private Hospital will engage in a four-hour strike, highlighting discontent with Ramsay Health Care’s pay and conditions offer. This industrial action is part of a broader campaign by the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA), aiming to secure better wages and staffing ratios.
Lake Macquarie Private Hospital, located in Gateshead, 15 km south of the Newcastle CBD. It is a 187-bed acute medical and advanced surgical facility and has a rich history, having expanded from its original 36 beds since its establishment in 1973. The hospital offers a range of services including cardiothoracic surgery, cancer care, and has the region’s first private emergency department.
The hospital’s staff and supporters will gather along the Pacific Highway, voicing concerns over the current pay offer, which they argue does not meet inflation or rising living costs. They are also demanding the implementation of safe staffing ratios across all wards and units, citing concerns for patient care and staff well-being.
Ramsay Health Care, the largest operator of private hospitals in Australia, is facing increased scrutiny as the workforce pushes for improved conditions. The company’s expansion plans for Lake Macquarie Private Hospital, including new operating theatres and enhanced emergency facilities is due to be completed in 2027 and highlights the growing demand for quality healthcare in the region.
As the industrial action unfolds, the broader healthcare community and the public will be watching closely at the ongoing challenges within Australia’s private healthcare sector.
