Maitland City Council is set to celebrate Local Government Week 2024 with a series of activities aimed at showcasing the diverse roles and responsibilities of local councils. The week-long event, running from 29 July to 4 August, seeks to highlight the council’s contributions beyond the common perception of managing roads, rates, and rubbish.

One of the key events is a special tour of the historic Maitland Town Hall on 30 July, led by Mayor Philip Penfold. Built in the late 1880s, the Town Hall is a significant heritage site, famously known for being the venue where Australia’s first Prime Minister, Edmund Barton, launched his campaign for the inaugural federal election in 1901. The tour will offer residents a unique glimpse into the building’s ornate ceilings and original features, which have been carefully preserved through a recent $9.7 million refurbishment.

On 1 August, the council will host a community morning tea at the Maitland Administration Centre. This event provides an opportunity for residents to engage with council staff, explore potential careers in local government, and receive free native seedlings and other giveaways. Mayor Penfold emphasized that Local Government Week is an excellent occasion to showcase the wide range of programs and initiatives that councils like Maitland run, highlighting the often-overlooked aspects of local governance.

In addition to these events, the council’s activities during Local Government Week also include promoting sustainability, arts and heritage programs, and community services, all aimed at enhancing the quality of life for Maitland’s residents. The week’s activities are part of a broader initiative to educate the public on the essential services provided by local councils, from environmental sustainability to community development.
